This lake Tonle Sap is situated about 15 km south of Siem Reap town of Cambodia. It is one of the greatest fresh water lakes in Asia, though the size of the lake changes with admiration to the changes of the seasons. During June to October months it is the monsoon season in Cambodia and at the time this season the lake is filled with the extra water from Mekong. The lake gets increased to an area of about 10000 sq km with a depth of almost 14 meters. The lake shrinks to a large extent and the depth also gets decreased to 2 meters. So the great time to see this place is at the time of monsoon time, when you take pleasure of your journey by boat on the lake to arrive the floating village at the back end.
This lake has been the major reason after the biodiversities at the nearby areas. Visitors can also enjoy a mixture of profusion of wildlife and the affluent culture of the local people. This greatest lake of the country widens across the northwest area and is enclosed by five provinces. A substantial number of populations live in this area and most of people earn their living through agriculture and fishing. The floating villages, great fish traps, houses on stilts include a distinguishing aspect of this lake.
This lake also includes the forest areas on the banks and there is wide variety of wildlife which includes crocodiles, snakes, tortoises and turtles and so on. There are more than 300 kinds of water fishes in this lake.
The most popular floating village which is situated in the end of this lake is called as Chong Khneas. You can take the boat trip to experience a wonderful lifestyle and culture on water.
