There are types of Law programs in the United States such as Juris Doctor (JD) Program and the Masters Degree In Law (LLM) Program. In the United States, one can go for studying at the graduate level only.
Hence to select law as a career, an American student should have finished under-graduation and only he becomes suitable to join the law school. The JD program is the major law degree with which one can begin practice in the courts. This almost takes three years to finish this program. The LLM program is further program after the achievement of JD program whereby an individual can concentrate in a certain branch of law. Each and every law schools in America require being recognized by the ABA which means the American Bar Association. There are some law related courses at the under-graduate level itself, but they may not be recognized by the ABA. Only when a candidate finishes a JD course in a recognized law school, then candidate is eligible to practice in courts.
The JD course mainly spotlights on American Law. In the first semester focuses on general laws such as constitutional laws, civil procedures and law of contracts and so on. In the second semester of the JD course is much focused on environmental laws and corporate law and so on. But the JD course is a general course and aims at offering exposure to all types of law. Recreations of court room quarrels are done. The JD program aims at offering experts experience to all the candidates and this contact is obtained by candidates by working for law firms, semi organizations and so on. A seeking law candidate requires clearing the LSAT exam before getting selected for the law programme. For those candidates whose medium of education is not English like TOEFL exam also requires to be taken.
The LLM the course aims at focused areas of law. Here an already qualified lawyer with or with no experience, gains specialization in their area of interest. The LLM program generally takes a year to finish and a candidate might have to submit a thesis before finishing the program.
